Brooklyn Park Mid-Century Modern Exterior Transformation

Brooklyn Park Siding Contractor Case Study

This 1970s Brooklyn Park home had been patched and repaired for years, but the exterior continued to show signs of deeper issues. Aging siding, improper installation, and missing water management systems left the home vulnerable to moisture, pests, and long-term damage.

After a hailstorm in 2023, the homeowners decided to move forward with a full exterior renovation instead of continuing temporary repairs. They wanted an exterior that looked intentional, performed properly, and would last for decades in Minnesota’s demanding climate.

Craftsman’s Choice was selected to complete the transformation using durable materials and installation methods designed for long-term performance. Today, the home features a cohesive mid-century modern exterior that is sealed, ventilated, and built to withstand harsh seasons.

Before After

Project Goal

To begin the process, we used weather-tested, durable and high-quality James Hardie home products to ensure this home never looked like the before photo ever again. The home practically sings with its fresh HardiePlank siding in the gorgeous, bold color of Deep Ocean. We complemented the siding beautifully with fresh, sturdy trim in Navajo Beige and added stunning, unique accents of deep red gable details.

One goal of this project was to keep the existing look of the home while upgrading to a material that wasn’t going to need constant maintenance.  James Hardie Siding fits solved this issue due to it’s durability and authentic look.

Another goal these homeowners, was to find a company for the installation that was familiar with older homes and wouldn’t be startled by the common surprises that present themselves when working on older homes.

Project Goal

The existing siding had been installed incorrectly and maintained through temporary repairs, which led to moisture concerns, pest entry points, and long-term deterioration. Without gutters, water had been running directly down the siding for years, accelerating damage.

The homeowners wanted to correct these issues at the source. The plan focused on properly sealing the home, installing durable siding suited for Minnesota weather, adding functional gutters, and restoring ventilation through new soffits and fascia. At the same time, the exterior needed to reflect a clean mid-century modern design built to last.

Design & Consultation

Craftsman’s Choice evaluated the home’s exterior conditions and developed a clear plan before work began. Preparation, sealing, and proper installation were treated as critical to long-term performance.

James Hardie® fiber cement siding was selected for its durability, moisture resistance, and compatibility with a mid-century modern aesthetic. The design combined vertical board-and-batten with wider lap siding to create stronger architectural lines. A darker palette featuring Iron Gray siding, black trim, and selective wood accents balanced durability with warmth and visual contrast.

Transformation

The renovation improved both performance and appearance. Improperly installed siding was removed and replaced with a complete James Hardie® siding system installed with proper sealing and ventilation. New soffits and fascia restored airflow and strengthened the exterior envelope.

A dated bow window was replaced with a large fixed glass window to simplify the facade and increase natural light. Seamless gutters were installed to manage runoff and protect the structure. A modern garage door and warm wood accents completed the updated mid-century modern exterior, creating a unified design built for long-term durability.

Customer Experience

The completed renovation delivered the durability, protection, and cohesive design the homeowners were looking for. With proper installation and long-lasting materials in place, the home is now sealed, protected, and built for Minnesota’s climate.

“More than anything, this project gave us peace of mind,” said homeowners Sway and Sarah.
