Proper Care and Maintenance of James Hardie Siding

James Hardie siding is made to last for a long time. It is sturdy, secure, and durable. But a bit of care can make sure it lasts for many years.

Wash Your Siding

Your siding will laterally get dirty over the months. Winter, summer, rain, exhaust, it all can stick to your home and the siding. A few times a year or when needed, take your garden hose and gently wash the siding.

This helps get the dirt off and loosen any other debris that may be sticking, like leaves. If there are grease stains, use a mild soap and a soft brush or cloth to try and work it free.

Don’t use your pressure washer as that may damage the surface. If you see mold around the siding, use a mild product.

Don’t use anything too harsh on the siding as you may ruin the color and even void the warranty. Try using mild soaps and cleansers with a soft to medium brush.

Keep Trees and Bushes Trimmed

The trees and plants around your home are also an important part of the proper care and maintenance of James Hardie fiber cement siding. Keep the trees and shrubs trimmed so they don’t damage the surface or get caught.

When you are watering the shrubs and trees, take care not to hose down the siding if avoidable. You don’t want it to get soaked repeatedly. This can damage the siding.

Clean Your Gutters

Another part of care and maintenance of your James Hardie siding. Water that can’t be removed properly through your gutters will eventually run over and come down the side of your house and over your siding. There may be larger bits that can damage the siding, as well.

Keeping the gutters maintained helps all aspects of your home including your landscaping, basement and foundation, roof, and siding. Have them checked and cleaned twice a year.
