Lake Minnetonka James Hardie Makeover

The Pelican Point neighborhood on Lake Minnetonka had reached a turning point. After thirty years, the cedar siding on the homes was cracked, weathered, and in need of constant repair. It aged the community and no longer reflected the beauty of its lakeside setting.

The Homeowners Association knew it needed more than a patchwork fix. The siding had to go, and a stronger, longer-lasting solution was required. That’s when the board selected Craftsman’s Choice to bring new life to the neighborhood.

Our team recommended James Hardie® siding and trim products engineered for Minnesota’s extreme weather and resistant to woodpecker damage. The Statement Collection® with ColorPlus® Technology provided both durability and consistent, elegant finishes that could never be matched with traditional painting.

Today, Pelican Point has been completely transformed. The homes are refreshed, the character of the community preserved, and homeowners now enjoy the confidence that comes with top-quality products backed by industry-leading warranties.

Project Goal

The cedar siding on the Pelican Point neighborhood homes had reached the end of its lifespan. Boards were cracked, weathered, and costly to maintain. The goal was to upgrade the homes with a durable product that maintained the community’s architectural character while protecting against Minnesota’s extreme climate and woodpecker damage.

Design & Consultation

The Pelican Point Homeowners Association appointed an Architecture Committee to evaluate siding options. After careful review, the committee selected James Hardie® fiber cement siding for its durability, warranty, and design versatility. Craftsman’s Choice guided the community through color and style choices to ensure the updated look fit seamlessly into the lakeside setting.

Transformation

The cedar siding was replaced with James Hardie® Statement Collection® products featuring ColorPlus® Technology. The factory-applied finish ensured long-lasting, fade-resistant color with a consistent, elegant appearance. The newly installed James Hardie siding gave the homes a fresh, modern look while staying true to the community’s original character.

Customer Experience

Homeowners were pleased with the results, citing durability, aesthetics, and peace of mind with Hardie’s 30-year non-prorated warranty and 15-year finish warranty. “The Statement Collection® is very elegant,” said Sue-Ann Pirsch, Architecture Committee Chair. “It makes me proud that it looks so good and turned out so well. I know it’s going to be here for many, many years.”

Frequently Asked Questions About This Project and James Hardie Siding

Pelican Point is a small community on the shores of Spring Park Bay on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota, made up of 20 duplexes and 40 residences. The neighborhood is more than 30 years old. Craftsman’s Choice re-sided homes throughout the community rather than a single house.

At Pelican Point, replacing the siding and trim across 20 duplexes and 40 residences took eight to nine months from start to finish. Timelines on association projects depend on the number of buildings, the condition found once the old siding comes off, and how the work is sequenced around residents who are living in their homes throughout.

At Pelican Point, the board asked an Architecture Committee, led by one of the community’s own members, to evaluate the options and bring back a recommendation. Craftsman’s Choice then developed the replacement plan jointly with the board, and project consultant Mike Ziegler worked with the association through product, design, and color selection before installation began.

The committee reviewed several fiber cement products as well as new cedar siding. James Hardie separated from the field quickly on water resistance, woodpecker resistance, appearance, and the strength of its color palette. HardieShingle was effectively settled from the outset, because the community wanted to keep the shingle look the homes were originally designed with.

Woodpeckers drill into siding chasing insects or hollow cavities, which is why cedar shingle takes repeated hits. At Pelican Point, woodpeckers had become a persistent problem, with one homeowner losing shingle pieces off the front of the house. Fiber cement gives them nothing to work with. It is dense, it does not harbor the insects they feed on, and it does not sound hollow.

ColorPlus® is a finish applied and baked onto the board at the James Hardie factory rather than brushed or sprayed on at the jobsite. The coating is formulated specifically for fiber cement, cures under controlled conditions, and goes on in consistent layers. That is why it resists fading and chipping longer than field paint, and why color stays uniform across an entire project.

Glossary

  • Fiber cement: A composite siding material formed from cement, sand, and cellulose fiber. The density of that mix is what allows it to shed moisture and resist pests and impact where wood siding cannot.
  • HardieShingle®: James Hardie’s fiber cement shingle panel, made to carry the look of cedar shakes without the upkeep. Often chosen where a home or community wants to preserve an existing shingle appearance.
  • Cedar siding: Natural wood siding valued for its appearance, but which needs repainting or restaining on a regular cycle and is prone to cracking, splitting, and woodpecker damage over time.
  • ColorPlus® Technology: James Hardie’s factory-applied finish, baked onto the board before delivery rather than painted on site. It delivers consistent color across an entire project and resists fading and chipping.
  • Statement Collection®: James Hardie’s core ColorPlus® color palette, offering a curated range of factory-finished colors.
  • Soffit and fascia: The underside of the roof overhang (soffit) and the board running along its edge (fascia). Both affect attic ventilation and are a common entry point for moisture and pests when they fail.
  • Non-prorated warranty: A warranty that pays its full value for the entire term rather than declining as the product ages. James Hardie’s 30-year product warranty is non-prorated.
  • Architecture Committee: A group appointed by a homeowners association board to evaluate exterior materials and design options and make a recommendation to the community.
