Lap siding is the most common type of siding found here in Minnesota. The name originates from the way that the siding is installed. One siding board is installed first and the next board “laps” over it to ensure that water sheds down the wall and doesn’t get behind the siding.
One of the reasons we love James Hardie siding so much is the wide range of possibilities that are available regarding lap size. James Hardie siding is available from 10 3/4″ lap all the way down to a custom 2 1/2″ lap size that is a Craftsman’s Choice special like this masterpiece. James Hardie siding is overlapped 1 1/4″ over that piece underneath it, so the overall size of the board is actually that much bigger than what you see. Sometimes we will use boards of a different size to create a modern alternating lap size. Check out an example here.
James Hardie siding is also available in smooth or cedarmill(woodgrain) texture. We often see the smooth siding used in a modern or historical application in the Minneapolis or St. Paul areas. The cedarmill woodgrain texture is more popular in the ring suburbs such as Maple Grove, Plymouth, Eden Prairie, or Woodbury.
