This 1960 era home in Golden Valley MN, was ready for a rehab. We started by removing the old hardboard siding. This siding had served it’s purpose after 60 years but was desperately in need of replacement. Once we removed the siding, we did a thorough inspection of the sheathing underneath to make sure there was no damage done from the years of exposure to our harsh Minnesota climate. Most people expect that there will be a lot of damage on older homes like this. Our experience has been that there is less damage on older homes than some of the newer homes that are being built. One reason for this is that newer homes are a lot tighter and once any moisture gets in, it is trapped and has no way to get out.
After the sheathing was determined to be in good shape, we installed the James HardieWrap. This house wrap offers breathability yet the ability to keep bulk water outside the home. Incorporating the house wrap into the flashing system, is an integral way to ensure that any moisture that does get under your siding, is able to make its way to the outside.
James Hardie Rich Espresso siding was installed on the home with a nice accent of a cedar soffit. Using cedar on your soffits gives a nice touch and won’t be a maintenance issue because the soffits don’t get any weather. In this instance we used a tongue and groove application.
